RPE stands for Respiratory Protection Equipment and is often used in working environment where the air is contaminated or have a lack of oxygen.
Not all hazards are the same when it comes to contaminated air. Some substances can cause minor short term effects, while others can have fatal consequences based on the substance and the exposure to it.
Respirators protect workers against hazards such as insufficient oxygen environments, harmful dusts, fogs, smokes, mists, gases and vapours. You need to know the hazards and the respiratory requirement for your work environment and the respiratory protective equipment you need.
Based on the country you are located in, there are set regulations you have to comply with as an employer. For UK and the European union it is ‘The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002’ which provide the main requirements related to use of PPE. However, have been amended by ‘The Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018’.
