Description

COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. Hazardous substances are found on many sites and can be used in or created by the construction process. A substance can have any of the three forms: solid, liquid or gas and can be present in hundreds of materials such as oil, cement, welding fumes, blood, asbestos and waste amongst others.

When working with substances hazardous to health, employers and employees are required to follow the regulation The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. Our COSHH toolbox talk help employers keep their employees safe and stay compliant with the law.

In order to be within the requirement of the law, employers have to conduct a risk assessment for health related issues when working with hazardous substances used in or created by a work activity. Precautions need to be taken to prevent or adequately control exposure.

When mitigating risks, a hierarchy of control measures must be followed. First step would be to change the activity or process, so that the hazardous substance isn’t used or generated. If elimination of hazardous substance is not feasible, a safer alternative should be used if possible. Only if the exposure can’t be controlled, PPE can be used as a last resort.
