Description

Employers are required to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to their employees when needed and ensure it is used at work. PPE is issued when certain hazards cannot be eliminated or controlled to an acceptable level, i.e. noise, dust and fall from height.

Based on the country you are located in, there are set regulations you have to comply with as an employer. For UK it is the ‘The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002’ and ‘The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended)’ which provide the main requirements related to PPE. However, have been amended by ‘The Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018’. These regulations are enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). HSE is the UK government agency responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare in Great Britain

These regulations can support the individual worker to understand how they can protect themselves with PPE at work and the requirements their employer need to comply with when risks cannot be eliminated or minimised to an acceptable level. Our PPE toolbox talk help employers keep their employees safe and stay within the requirement of the law.

Definition of PPE

Personnel protective equipment (PPE) can be defined as:

  • Equipment that protects users against health or safety risks which cannot be eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level. Some of the most common types of PPE include items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

Items Covered in Our PPE Toolbox Talk

Our PPE toolbox talk is split up in following sections:

  • Introduction: Provides an overview of the common types of PPE and types of hazards when it should be used.
  • The Dangers: This section covers various types of hazards and the PPE that should be used to reduce the risk.
